# Recommend a model

> A short list of models for a use case, or a ready config for a coding agent. Public, no key needed.

No authentication. Ask by use case or by agent; with neither, you get the `general` list.

## Query parameters

<ParamField query="usecase" type="string" default="general">
  One of `coding`, `sql`, `reasoning`, `fast`, `long-context`, `vision`, `multilingual`, `general`, `cheap`, `agent`, `content`, `marketing`. `for` is accepted as a synonym. An unknown value returns the `general` list, with `usecase` echoing what you sent, lowercased and with characters other than letters and `-` removed.
</ParamField>

<ParamField query="agent" type="string">
  One of `cline`, `roo-code`, `openclaw`, `claude-code`, `aider`, `opencode`, `cursor`, `kilo-code`. When it names a known agent, the response is the agent form below and `usecase` is ignored. An unknown agent falls back to the use-case form.
</ParamField>

## Response: by use case

```json theme={null}
{
  "usecase": "coding",
  "tip": "...",
  "recommended": [
    {
      "id": "kimi-k2.6",
      "name": "Kimi K2.6",
      "context_window": 262144,
      "speed": "medium",
      "best_for": "Agentic coding, vision, reasoning, long horizon",
      "pricing": { "input": 0.7856, "output": 3.667, "cached": null },
      "promotion": null,
      "supports_tools": true,
      "free_tier": false
    }
  ],
  "aliases": { "best": "...", "fast": "...", "code": "..." },
  "available_usecases": ["coding", "sql", "..."],
  "available_agents": ["cline", "roo-code", "..."]
}
```

`recommended` is in order of preference. `pricing` is the rate in force today, in USD per million tokens; `promotion` names the list price it returns to when a promotion is running, and is `null` otherwise. `free_tier` says whether a key that has never added credits can call the model. `aliases` maps each [model alias](/guides/model-aliases) to the model it resolves to now.

## Response: by agent

```json theme={null}
{
  "agent": "cline",
  "recommended": {
    "model": "kimi-k2.6",
    "name": "Kimi K2.6",
    "reason": "...",
    "pricing": { "input": 0.7856, "output": 3.667, "cached": null },
    "promotion": null,
    "free_tier": false
  },
  "alternatives": [
    { "model": "qwen-3.6-plus", "name": "...", "tag": "highest-quality", "reason": "...", "pricing": {}, "promotion": null, "free_tier": true }
  ],
  "config_example": { "apiProvider": "openai-compatible", "baseUrl": "https://kymaapi.com/v1", "apiKey": "YOUR_KYMA_KEY", "model": "kimi-k2.6" },
  "needs": ["tools", "long-context"],
  "aliases": {},
  "available_agents": ["cline", "roo-code", "..."]
}
```

`config_example` is shaped for that agent's own settings; replace `YOUR_KYMA_KEY` with your key. `needs` lists what the agent relies on (`tools`, `long-context`).

The lists are picked by Kyma and change as models are added and retired. For the full catalog with filters, use [`GET /v1/models`](/api-reference/models-list).
